The Northwest Indiana Times, and the Post Tribune are the top newspapers for info about the Gary School System.

If you are not receiving a paper, I would recommend one of these two. The number for the PT is (800) 876-8974, and the number for the NWIT is (800) 589-3331.

The Times’ challenge is to serve such a diverse and balkanized community. It does so by producing nine daily geographically zoned editions, providing both a regional news report and the depth and flavor of a hometown newspaper.

STUDENT SPEAKERS EARN TOP HONORS

West Side High School junior Brandon Griffin knows that money doesn't grow on trees and has a $150 Visa gift card to prove it.

Griffin's speech on money captured the first-place prize in the annual Gary Rotary Club Speech Competition held Thursday at the office of the Teachers' Union Building.

The speech competition lets local students express their views on various topics in a 10-minute time limit.

Griffin, 16, an entrepreneur with two businesses — Quality Web Solutions and BLG Publishing — said the topic of money growing on trees came from the reality many teenagers face when they get their first paycheck.

“Teenagers under 18 years old have income tax taken out of their paychecks. We have to understand the value of a dollar,” Griffin said.

TOP CITY HISTORIANS

Tolleston Middle School proved it had the right stuff to repeat Thursday as the team recaptured first place in the African-American Superbowl at West Side High School.

While Emerson School for the Visual and Performing Arts was close, Tolleston team members Tuesdai Perry, Brandon Jentress, Lena Simmons and Shauna Creal, answered all but one question correctly in the three-round competition.

“This was so exciting for us and we studied really hard,” Perry said. Perry, a seventh-grader, was also the team captain. Not only did Tolleston receive a first-place trophy, they also received a trophy for most improved ISTEP scores.

Gary Mayor Scott King announced before the competition that the winning team would get a day at a Gary RailCats baseball game this spring, including the skybox treatment.

All of the teams began preparation for the competition in November.

The Post-Tribune has been in Northwest Indiana for years. As a child, this paper was always on my table for me to read, with all of the stories glaring in my face. Now it is on the web. Check it out. Click on the icon above.
