A shooting outside Wirt High School during graduation ceremonies critically wounded a 21-year-old man Tuesday night, police said.
Tywon Newsom of Gary was shot in the parking lot south of the high school about 9:15 p.m.
Police said Newsom was at the school because his friends were graduating.
Circumstances of the shooting were still under investigation late Tuesday, but multiple shots were fired, scattering shell casings across the lot.
Suspects were in handcuffs and were being questioned at the scene.
Witnesses said a sport-utility vehicle roared past police officers guarding the parking lot and was followed by a white Buick Regal, which remained at the scene Tuesday, surrounded by yellow caution tape.
Anyone with information about the shooting can call the Gary Homicide Squad at 881-1210.
